After winning the PhD scholarship co-financed by NBI (value of 60,000 euros) and made available by the Politecnico di Milano, 29-year-old engineer Francesco Rota, from 9 December 2020 is a Doctor of Innovation Engineering , Proactive Maintenance and IoT.
Achieved at the Department of Architecture, Construction Engineering and Built Environment of the Milanese university, Rota's PhD ended with a thesis entitled “A Proactive Maintenance Approach. Innovation through the PrIME model (integrated proactive maintenance environment based on IoT and neural networks) for the management of complex buildings".
Case studies of Rota's thesis are the San Luca Hospital in Lucca and the New Hospital of the Apuane in Massa and Carrara, where the management of non-core services is entrusted to NBI S.p.A. for a grant period of 20 years. In his thesis, Rota conducted an accurate research defining a model to be able to predict plant failures through the dynamic analysis of big data and bad data through neural networks. With the use of IoT (Internet of Things) technology, the results of neural network predictions are transferred to the various components of the maintenance team of a job order.
"In order to use this model, maintenance personnel must describe the failures that occurred through log books - explains engineer Rota - so that the neural networks can learn from sensor data and from maintenance technicians' information. In short - concludes Rota - the PrIME model allows you to switch from a static maintenance plan to a dynamic and proactive one, in which the interventions are no longer pre-established but defined on the basis of the real needs of the system ".
During his PhD, the engineer Francesco Rota had as supervisor Professor Cinzia Talamo, full professor of Information Systems and Maintenance and as tutor Professor Paola Caputo, associate professor of Plant Systems (both teach at the Department of Architecture, Construction Engineering and Built Environment of the Politecnico di Milano). In the last year and a half, engineer Rota has also conducted a visiting period first at the Institute for Risk and Uncertainty of the University of Liverpool and then at the Strathclyde University of Glasow. In the two universities, Francesco Rota has respectively deepened the aspects of research related to the analysis of data through neural networks and aspects related to the IoT together with neural networks.
